Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MIAM?

A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is the initial meeting between a mediator and each person individually. It’s an opportunity to explore whether mediation is a suitable and safe option for your circumstances, and to explain how the process works. In most cases, attending a MIAM is a legal requirement before you can apply to court for a family matter.

What if I don't want to be in the same room as the other person?

If you don’t feel comfortable meeting with the other person directly—either in person or online—we can use 'shuttle' mediation. This is where I speak with each of you separately in different 'rooms' (whether physical or virtual) and share information and proposals between you. This allows you to reach agreements without having to interact directly.

Can mediation take place online?

Yes, online mediation via Zoom is a very effective and popular way to resolve family issues. It offers flexibility, saves travel time, and allows you to participate from the comfort of your own home. It is just as formal and confidential as meeting in person, and I will guide you through the setup to ensure it runs smoothly.

How long does mediation take?

The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the issues and how much you both agree on. Typically, family mediation involves between two and four joint sessions, each lasting about 90 minutes. MIAMs usually last around 45 to 60 minutes. We move at a pace that works for both of you.

What if the other person doesn't want to attend mediation?
How do I arrange an appointment?

Mediation is a voluntary process; both people must agree to participate. If the other person declines after I have contacted them, I can provide you with the necessary certification to show you have attempted the MIAM process, which you will need if you decide to proceed with a court application. However, mediation is often more successful when both parties are willing to engage voluntarily from the start.

The easiest way to arrange a MIAM or family mediation appointment is to contact me via the website or by phone. I’ll ask for a few initial details to set up your separate MIAM appointment. Once both MIAMs are complete and mediation is agreed upon as suitable, we can schedule your first joint session at a time that works for everyone.
